How Much Does New Flooring Cost in Memphis? What Actually Moves the Price

It’s the first question almost everyone asks, and it’s a fair one: before you fall in love with a floor, you want to know if it fits your budget. The honest answer is that there is no single price — but there are real factors that move the number, and knowing them protects you from inflated quotes and mid-job surprises.

Here’s what actually decides what your project costs in Memphis.

First, how flooring is priced here

In the United States, flooring quotes are given per square foot. That matters when you compare quotes: make sure every company is talking about the same unit and the same scope, because a “cheaper” quote that leaves out removal, leveling, or trim is not actually cheaper.

And the question behind the question — “how much does it cost to install flooring per square foot” or “how much does it cost to replace the flooring in a house” — only has a real answer once someone has measured your rooms. Anyone who gives you a firm price over the phone without seeing your floors is guessing with your money.

Factor 1: the material you choose

Laminate does not cost the same as luxury vinyl plank (LVP), and neither costs the same as real hardwood or tile. Within each material there are also ranges: the thickness and quality of the wear layer — the clear coat that protects the floor from daily wear — change both the price and how long the floor lasts. That’s why two quotes for “vinyl plank” can come out very different: they may not be quoting the same floor.

Factor 2: the size and shape of the rooms

A square, empty room installs fast. A hallway with lots of corners, a bathroom with cuts around the toilet, or a set of stairs takes more time and more cuts. That’s real work, and a serious quote reflects it room by room — not as one vague lump sum.

Factor 3: what’s underneath

Under your current floor there’s another floor — the subfloor. If it’s level and solid, the job moves fast. If it’s uneven, water-damaged, or loose, it has to be fixed first, because a new floor over a bad base lifts, squeaks, and wears out early. This is the number one reason a quote changes after the old floor comes up, and a good installer explains it before the work starts, not after.

Factor 4: removing the old floor and moving furniture

Does the old carpet, laminate, or tile have to come out? Who moves the furniture, and who hauls the old material away? Ask before you sign — this is one of the biggest differences between one quote and another, and it should never be a surprise at the end.

Factor 5: the finishing details nobody mentions first

A floor doesn’t end at the last plank. There are baseboards, transition pieces where one floor meets another, and the finish around doors and stairs. Those details are what make a floor look finished instead of half-done, and they take time and material. A complete quote includes them from the start; if yours doesn’t mention them, ask about them before you compare totals.

What about installing it yourself to save money?

It’s a valid idea, and plenty of people try it with click-lock floors, which are the friendliest to do yourself. Just count the full cost: cutting tools, extra material for learning mistakes (they happen, that’s normal), and your time. And most importantly: if the base underneath is uneven and it doesn’t get corrected, the new floor squeaks and moves no matter how good the planks are. If you start the project and halfway through you’d rather have a professional finish it, that’s fine — it happens more often than people admit, and that’s what we’re here for.
